Horizon Imaging was recently commissioned to take a set of background images to use behind computer-generated views from the top of a new shopping centre in the heart of Oxford which is currently under construction.

The views were particularly difficult to capture, as permission had not been granted to take the photographs from within the busy construction site due to the high level of activity and open excavations present at the time of the shoot. Instead, we took the photographs from the perimeter of the site from the publicly-accessible pavements using our fully-portable telescopic mast – areas simply not accessible using traditional vehicle-mounted masts.

The images were all taken at 15 metres altitude which will correspond with the height of the shopping centre once it is completed. It was hoped that at this altitude it might be possible to see some of the 'dreaming spires' of Oxford's colleges and churches – and as the image above right shows, the spires were indeed visible! The image below right gives an idea of just how busy and congested the site was at the time of the shoot. Interestingly, a large section of the construction site has evolved into the largest archaeological dig in Oxford's history, with many ancient building foundations and historical artefacts being found under the mud – you can clearly see the exposed foundations in the bottom half of the image on the right.

Do you have a site which is particularly difficult to photograph? Have you considered aerial photographs from a real aircraft but were put off by the plan-view feel of high-level aerial photographs? Give us a call today to see how we may be able to help with our low-level drone and mast aerial photography services.
