The Owner – David Hogg

Since 2003, David Hogg has been continuously honing his technical and aesthetic skills in photography, both through photographic forums on the internet, and through membership of several photographic clubs where he has picked up a number of awards. In 2014 he achieved his Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society, marking an important milestone in his quest to fine-tune his photographic skills.

During a similar time-frame, David has been experimenting with radio-controlled aero-modelling. Starting with simple radio-controlled foam gliders in 1998, he slowly acquired knowledge (through forums on the internet) in the construction, operation and maintenance of model aircraft and helicopters. In 2006 David started taking photographs from model aircraft, with one photograph in particular giving him a glimpse of the incredible potential of this new type of photography. This photograph of the Claremont Mansion, Esher, Surrey can be seen by clicking the image on the right.

In 2007 David started taking aerial photographs for commercial clients and has since developed a strong client base and a reputation for producing photographs of exceptional quality. David has one simple goal for Horizon Imaging – to provide complete customer satisfaction through the capture and delivery of stunning photographs, whether taken from the air or on the ground.

David studied Electronics and Electrical Engineering at the University of Surrey, so has a solid understanding of the technology used on the aerial photography platforms. He spent 5.5 years in the Aviation, Engineering and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle industries, specialising in Computer Aided Design, manufacturing and flight testing before devoting his full attention to Horizon Imaging.

The Company

The Company

Horizon Imaging was founded in 2007 to offer aerial photography services using an innovative new platform, the radio-controlled model aircraft.

Since then, David has continued to improve the technology behind the aerial photography platforms, and has developed a range of supporting services including telescopic mast photography, ground-based architectural photography, virtual tours and video production.

If you have requirements that do not fit into these categories, do still get in touch and I will do my best to help. For example, I have contacts in the aerial photography industry who offer photography from full-size aircraft from between 1000ft and 5000ft – not something I can do, but I can help point you in the right direction.

Horizon Imaging is based in Hampshire, and operates throughout the South East of the UK, including: Greater London, Surrey, West Sussex, East Sussex, Brighton and Hove, Kent, Medway, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.

However, if you have requirements outside these areas, please contact me as I may still be able to help you, or at least point you in the direction of someone who can.

The Technology

The Technology

Horizon Imaging uses the latest digital imaging technology to ensure your photographs have great definition, clarity and rich colours. All photographs are captured in the 'RAW' image format, and then post-processed to extract the maximum amount of detail in the highlights and shadows – ultimately producing life-like images with great impact.

Horizon Imaging's aerial photography platforms have been custom-designed for the greatest portability and functionality, and include a 15m (50ft) telescopic mast, and radio-controlled drones. Both platforms feature a live video-feed to the ground, so the client can see what the camera is seeing in real-time, and request changes to the composition of the images on the fly.

CAA Certification and Insurance

CAA Certification and Insurance

Since their introduction in 2010, Horizon Imaging has fully complied with the UK Civil Aviation Authority's regulations governing the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (or 'Drones') for commercial 'Aerial Work'.

Without a licence from the CAA (known as a 'Permission For Aerial Work' or PFAW), it is against the law to undertake any commercial aerial photography work using drones – 'commercial' meaning any work of valuable consideration to the operator. This licence will only be granted by the CAA if the operator holds adequate Public Liability insurance, has received suitable training and has written a detailed manual describing their operating procedures, risk mitigation strategies and maintenance schedules.

Please make sure you check that any Drone Aerial Photography company you work with holds one of these Permissions from the CAA. If they cannot produce their Permission when requested, then they may be operating illegally. Illegal commercial operators not only harm the reputation of the drone industry as a whole, but using an unlicensed operator could potentially pose a safety risk to you and your company as they may not have received appropriate training in how to operate drones safely. Additionally, if anything were to happen and you had knowingly employed an unlicensed operator, you may become liable through vicarious liability.

For more information please read our Guidelines for hiring a Drone Aerial Photographer.
